Giant
Giant was established in 1972 in Dajia, Taichung County (now
part of Taichung City), by King Liu and several friends. A major breakthrough
came in 1977 when Giant’s chief executive, Tony Lo, negotiated a deal with Schwinn to
begin manufacturing bikes as an OEM.

Specialized
Specialized Bicycle Components,
Inc., more commonly known simply as Specialized, is a major American brand of bicycles and
related products. It was founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard and is
based in Morgan Hill,
California. Their latest bike, raced by Mark Cavendish in le Tour de France was developed with technology from McLaren Group.
Cannondale
The Cannondale Bicycle Corporation
is an American division of Canadian conglomerate Dorel Industries that supplies
bicycles. It is headquartered in Wilton, Connecticut with manufacturing and
assembly facilities in China and Taichung, Taiwan.
Santa
Cruz
Santa Cruz Bicycles is a manufacturer of mountain bikes based
in Santa Cruz, California. They
sponsor the Santa Cruz Syndicate, a downhill racing team. The company is moving
premises in early 2013.
GT
GT Bicycles designs and manufactures road, mountain, and BMX bicycles
— originally in the United States, and now as a division of Canadian
conglomerate, Dorel Industries, which also markets Cannondale, Schwinn, Mongoose,
IronHorse, Dyno and RoadMaster bicycle brands, all manufactured in Asia.
Merida
Merida Industry Co., Ltd (MIC) is a Taiwan-based bicycle design, manufacture, and sales company. It was started in 1972 by Ike
Tseng. The original layout was based on the Raleigh Nottingham factory as
Merida began by making Raleigh bikes for the North American market. Ike was a
very talented engineer, and the company grew as a well-respected OE
manufacturer making many well-respected brands.
Scott
In 1958, engineer and skier Ed Scott
from Sun Valley, Idaho invented a ski pole made of aluminum, which compared
favorably with those made of bamboo or steel. On the basis of this success, the
company started to produce many kinds of sports goods. In 1970, Scott sold
their first protection goggles for motocross riders; further motocross wear
followed.
Scott
expanded to Europe in 1978, settling their headquarters in Fribourg,
Switzerland.
Kona
Kona Bikes is a bicycle company
based in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Founded in 1988 and still owned by Dan Gerhard and
Jacob Heilbronn in Vancouver, it has its World Headquarters in Ferndale, Washington
with a European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and Canadian headquarters in Vancouver, BC.
Yeti
Yeti mountain bikes have been around since 1985
when Yeti Cycles was founded by John Parker. Parker was a welder who built
movie sets in Hollywood and later became a mountain bike designer and racer. He
later became one of the sport’s guardians, eventually being inducted as a
trustee of NORBA Board of Directors for 5 years. Yeti Cycles originated in
California during the time mountain biking was getting started. The first
mountain bike World Championships took place in Durango, Colorado in 1990. In
1991, Parker moved the Yeti Cycles factory from California to Durango to be
closer to the action.
